From Tom…
I am currently coaching [tag]softball[/tag] for a 7th grade CYO team. It is a challenge to keep the girls interested and engaged in the practices. We have 11 players, so the following works pretty well with a small squad, but can be expanded as well.
For the last 30-40 minutes of [tag]softball practice[/tag] after the girls have drilled at their regular positions, each girl takes a spot on the field with two girls on deck and one at the plate. I pitch to a hitter who gets either 3 hits, (contacts with the ball) or 3 strikes. Once the batter hits, the infielders switch positions clock-wise from 3rd to 1st. The batter goes to field at 3rd. The outfield rotates counter-clockwise with the 1st baseman moving to right field and the left fielder moving to the on deck circle.
The beauty is all get to experience “fielding” all positions and all get to bat. It moves rather quickly and keeps the girls focused. A variation is to have the batter run when they reach base until they are put out, or we run out of hitters.
