Richard and Scott, two of my readers, came up with some great suggestions covering [tag]free girls softball practices drills[/tag]. Keep ‘em coming!
From Richard…
Here is one of my [tag]softball drills[/tag] that I used with the really young girls, 5-6 year olds. We were trying to learn to catch fly balls and the girls would not get under the ball. They were trying to judge the ball coming down to their side and usually the [tag]softball[/tag] would hit the ground just out of reach.
So here is what we did.
We put our batting helmets on and I threw popups with plastic golf balls and the girls would have to catch the ball with the top of their head. If they did it right the ball would bounce straight up in the air. After awhile they got the idea of how to get under the ball.
From Scott…
I use this [tag]softball throwing drill[/tag] to help teach my [tag]outfielders[/tag] to keep their throws down. I have them either start with a ball in their hand or on the ground in front of them. I also have a teammate standing approximately 10-15 feet in front of them holding a hula hoop above their head. The outfielder must throw to the named base or cutoff, but must try to do it by throwing the ball through the hoop.
I find that this eliminates the high trajectory at which inexperienced/under coached players typically throw the ball.
