Purpose:

Players practice bunting off live pitching.

Setup:

The batter should be at home plate. The pitcher should be positioned in the pitching circle, and the catcher should be behind home plate, ready to receive the pitch.

Instructions:

The pitcher delivers a pitch to the catcher, and the batter attempts to bunt the ball successfully. Batters should focus on bunting only strikes, adjusting their stance, grip, and bat position to ensure accurate contact with the ball. Rotate pitchers frequently to keep their arms fresh and maintain a competitive practice environment. Vary the bunting situations, such as performing a sacrifice bunt to advance runners or bunting to reach base safely. Coaches should emphasize aiming the bunt toward a specific area on the field, considering the defensive alignment and game situation.

Coaching Tips:

  • Rotate pitchers to keep them fresh and ensure a range of pitch styles.
  • Remind batters to focus on bunting only strikes and maintaining control of the bat.
  • Vary bunting scenarios, such as switching between a sacrifice bunt and a bunt for a hit, to simulate game-like situations.

Tips for Younger Athletes:

  • Encourage proper hand placement on the bat, with the top hand sliding up the barrel and the bottom hand maintaining grip on the handle for better control.
  • Reinforce a balanced stance with feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and weight evenly distributed to enhance stability and reaction time.
  • Stress the importance of watching the ball closely from the pitcher’s release to the moment of contact, using cues like “see the ball, hit the bat” to improve focus and timing.

Tips for Older Athletes:

  • Emphasize using “soft hands” when bunting, allowing the bat to gently meet the ball and absorb the impact to control placement and minimize ball speed.
  • Focus on reading the pitcher’s grip, motion, and release point to better anticipate the pitch type, speed, and trajectory, aiding in decision-making for bunt angles.
  • Develop situational awareness by practicing different bunting techniques, such as drag bunts or push bunts, and deciding which technique best suits the game context and defensive positioning.
