Purpose
Emphasizes going from the open position to throwing the ball.
Setup
The pitcher stands about 20 feet from the catcher.

Instructions
- The pitcher starts in the open position with her glove shoulder high and pointed toward the target, and the ball over her head.
- She goes through her motion, bringing the glove in and swinging the ball back, down, and then toward the plate.
- She throws the ball to the catcher.
Coaching Tips
- When running this drill, you can have the pitcher use just her arms on the throw or drag her back foot up on the follow-through.
- As the pitcher gets better and more used to running this drill, you can add a stride step to the beginning to help improve her rhythm.
- Toward the end of the motion, the pitcher (right-handed) should drive the right leg into the left leg as fast as possible – this helps prevent leaning and getting off balance.
Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Focus on keeping the glove shoulder pointed directly at the target during the entire motion to improve accuracy.
- Remind players to keep their fingers on top of the ball throughout the arm circle for better control.
- If balance is an issue, use a small marker or cone to guide them in dragging their back foot straight forward during the motion.
Tips for Older Athletes:
- Emphasize maintaining a consistent and fast arm circle speed to maximize velocity without losing control.
- Encourage players to focus on wrist snap at release to increase spin and movement on the ball.
- Reinforce finishing the motion balanced and in an athletic position, ready to field a ball, to build good habits for game situations.
