Purpose:
This drill teaches players the proper sliding technique to beat a tag-out play while minimizing the risk of injury.
Setup:
- Create a couple of stations, each with a line of players and a bag to slide into.
- Ensure ample space for players to approach and slide safely.
Instructions:
- Before running the drill, demonstrate and instruct players on proper sliding technique:
- The player should create a triangle with their legs.
- Slide using the leg underneath while keeping the top foot free to touch the bag.
- Teach players to avoid sliding directly on their backside, as this can be painful. Emphasize sliding with the back side of their thigh for better control and safety.
- Players will take turns running toward the bag and sliding into it at each station.
- Once players gain confidence, gradually increase the speed and add realistic game situations.
Coaching Tips:
- Once players master the sliding technique, introduce scenarios that require sliding, such as avoiding a tag during a close play.
- Add a defensive player who attempts to tag the sliding player to simulate in-game pressure.
- For beginners, start teaching sliding in the outfield grass where the surface is softer before progressing to the infield dirt.
Coaching Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Use visual cues like “triangle legs” and “foot to the bag” to help young players understand and remember the proper form.
- Have players practice sliding in slow motion first to build confidence before increasing speed.
- Ensure a controlled environment, focusing on safety by reminding players to keep their hands and head up when sliding.
Coaching Tips for Older Athletes:
- Emphasize timing and decision-making, teaching players to recognize when to slide to avoid being tagged out.
- Focus on improving slide variations, such as the hook slide or pop-up slide, to add versatility to their base running.
- Reinforce explosiveness in their approach to the bag to ensure they maintain speed while preparing to slide.
