Special thanks to Ashley for sending this one in. If you’ve every struggled with coming up with [tag]softball drills to do on a rainy day[/tag], you should try this out!
From Ashley…
This might be a widely used [tag]softball drill[/tag] but my team absolutely loves it and it works on hand eye coordination for batting and fielding.
We will play this game as a [tag]softball[/tag] team at most once a week but also use the batting part of it as one of our [tag]softball drills[/tag] when we split up.
The game is just two teams (I have 15 kids ages 9 & 10 on my team) of 8 and 7 with temporary bases set up in the outfield at a shorter distance than normal and we just use the yellow “Hit Stick” with the small yellow dimple balls. (I prefer the balls that you get from the golf store they seem to be a little lighter and don’t quite go as far.)
The defense uses no gloves but we stress two hands. We did this a lot last year and I really think it was one of the reasons we won our league with a 16-1 record. It really helps our players learn to watch the ball all the way to the bat. We also use it as one of our quick batting warm ups before each game giving each player 5 to 10 cuts each as they rotate with this and the batting cage with real balls and bats.
This is also a fun game for them after bad weather and the infield is to wet to play on.
