I use “Follow the Ball” at the beginning of [tag]softball practice[/tag]s right after our stretching and loosing up of the arms. This is one of our favorite [tag]softball warm-up drills[/tag].
Follow the Ball:
Put your entire team at the following infield positions, two or three deep: 3rd, SS, 2nd, 1st, and C. Hit a grounder to short, who fields and throws to 1st, who catches and throws to 2nd who catches and throws to 3rd, who catches and throws home.
Each time a player throws the [tag]softball[/tag], she follows the ball to that position and then gets in line at that position. The person 2nd in line at 1st, SS, and 3rd, backs up the throw at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. After the ball is thrown to the catcher, you start again, hitting the ball to the SS.
This [tag]softball drill[/tag] teaches a lot of fundamentals: Fielding, throwing and following through, stretching at first, catching at 2nd, 3rd, and Home, backing up positions.
It is also a good drill to get the blood pumping!
