Purpose:
Improves outfielders’ reactions to the ball. This is also a good conditioning drill.
Setup:
The outfielder stands in the outfield, and the coach stands nearby.
Instructions:
- The coach throws a ball to the outfielder’s left. The player runs and catches it, then throws it back.
- Next, the coach throws a ball to the player’s right. They run and catch it and throw it back.
- The drill continues in this manner, with the coach alternating sides.
Coaching Tips:
- The coach should throw a mix of fly balls, line drives, and ground balls.
- The outfielder should be getting behind the ball when possible, and using good footwork for momentum when throwing.
