Purpose:
Players learn to bunt to specific zones. This drill also develops soft hands.
Setup:
Set 3 cones about 8 feet from home plate, about 8-10 feet apart.
Instructions:
1. The coach will pitch to each batter, who attempts to bunt the ball in either of the two alleyways created by the cones.
Coaching Tips:
- The batter should only bunt strikes, pulling the bat back with authority. This will ensure that the umpire in a game situation will know the player is not attempting to bunt.
- Make sure the batter does not pull their head out while bunting. This common mistake among young hitters can cause them to pull their bat back along with their head, which can cause foul balls.
Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Emphasize keeping the bat level and parallel to the ground to maintain control over the bunt direction.
- Encourage a light grip on the bat to develop soft hands and reduce the ball’s bounce off the bat.
- Teach them to square up early and stay balanced, ensuring their body remains still while making contact with the ball.
Tips for Older Athletes:
- Practice adjusting the angle of the bat to control the placement of the bunt more precisely within the designated zones.
- Work on bunting different pitch types (e.g., fastballs, change-ups) to improve versatility and readiness for game situations.
- Reinforce the importance of quick footwork and body positioning to ensure optimal contact and placement of the bunt.
