In today’s video blog post, I want to share with you a great combination drill that my players really love! You can also use this as a conditioning drill. It’s called the “Zig Zag” Drill for Softball Outfielders.
Zig Zag Drill for Softball Outfielders
This softball outfielders drill can be done with four players or more and it incorporates a number of skills that your athletes need to be very comfortable with.
- The ball starts with an over-the-shoulder throw to the fielder, who is going to drop step, field it as an outfielder will field a fly ball, and make a long throw as if she’s throwing home or to second from the outfield.
- She’s then going to take the place of the tosser and receive the ball with both hands up, calling for it, and asking for it in an aggressive tone.
- This player then becomes the tosser. She’ll toss it over the shoulder of the receiver and take the place of the long throw.
- This drill continues to rotate.
Again, you can use this as a conditioning drill and you’ve gotten the drop step, the fielding position on a fly ball, the long throw, and receiving all in one drill.
