Baserunning Essentials: Leaving Second

Whenever you get to second base, think “Score”. Your lead needs to be such that you have ample opportunity to take two bases.

When leaving second base, you are going to use your basic rocker step, and leave the base at the top of the pitchers windup. Leaving at the top of the pitchers windup allows you enough time to take a great lead and still get back safely to the base, if necessary.

When you leave second base, you are not going in a straight line — unless you are stealing. You are going to take an angle out away from the baseline towards the shortstop. This puts you in a better position to hit third and come straight into home, so when that ball is hit, and you have the opportunity to score, your body is in a position to do just that.
