Many coaches struggle with poor performance and improving morale. Here is one suggestion that Frank sent in. Even though this is a fastpitch softball coaching tip it applies to all softball coaches.
Softball is a sport that you cannot survive in if you're not good at throwing. This is an essential skill for the game. Some people are under the impression that only a pitcher needs to know how to throw. It is vital that you make sure that your entire team gets practice throwing. You need to load your practices with lots of softball throwing drills.
Practice sounds as much of a chore as homework, but it be fun. Just use fun softball practice drills your players really enjoy – and have a happy winning team!
In my softball playing days as a young child, I always resented being stuck in the outfield because my coach did not sufficiently emphasize the importance of a strong outfield. So I picked daisies from the grass, missing numerous power hits and pop-flies instead of developing the skills and mental discipline required of a successful outfielder. Had my coach run some of these softball coaching drills at practice, maybe I would have developed into an outstanding outfielder, which is a crucial element of any winning team.
Everything can be done better with practice. Softball is no exception. But the question becomes what are some of the best ways to make sure that players are getting the most out of their practice? One of the best ways for a softball team to become stronger is through teaching softball drills. These drills will teach players how to react to different common occurrences on the softball field. But then another question arises. What kind of drills should softball players do? A million different things can happen during a softball game. So the question becomes what are the right kinds of drills that coaches should go through with their players?
Dreary weather in the off-season, pre-season, and early season doesn't mean you can't have players practice. Being indoors might limit some activities, but it can certainly be a fun environment. Use the following drills to brighten the coldest or wettest day.
